Subcultures and You
Subcultures are groups of people that are in some way distinct from other members of society. You can think of subcultures as communities of people that are different from the norm in some way. For example, having children or owning an iPhone are common practices in our society, so doing these things does not make you a member of a subculture. Some common characteristics of subcultures include:
beliefs that set them apart from the rest of society
social norms and values that are unique or contrast with mainstream culture
interaction organized around music, art or other shared activities
a special way of communicating (slang)
material objects (clothing, equipment etc) that are specific to the group
For this homework assignment, I want you to discuss the following:
Describe a subculture that you currently or formerly belong to. Looking at the characteristics I have listed above, discuss the characteristics that you share with other members of the subculture.
Refer to the list of elements of culture in your textbook readings (Values, Beliefs, Norms, Symbols and Language), describe the non-material elements of your subculture. How do these elements contrast with mainstream culture in the United States?
The textbook makes the case that “material and nonmaterial aspects of culture are linked, and physical objects often symbolize cultural ideas”. What are the material aspects of your subculture? Does this subculture use material culture in a unique way? Are the material items associated with your subculture linked with the nonmaterial elements of your subculture? Explain.
Your paper should be 3 pages of writing, double spaced, using a 12 point font. This should be written entirely in your own words. Plagiarism will result in an automatic zero on this assignment. Seriously. Make sure you thoroughly respond to all of the questions on the prompt. Please submit either a pdf of word doc.
If you want to quote something from the assigned readings, you will need to use appropriate citations in your work. The author of the assigned textbook is OpenStax and the publication date is 2015. Some examples of in-text citations would be:
Including the date if you are referencing the textbook….for example: “According to Openstax (2015), there is a…..”
or at the end of a paragraph summarizing an idea…the citation would look like: (Openstax 2015)
Include a works cited page at the end of your paper. For more information on how to cite sources, here is a link to a guide produced by the American Sociological Association: ASA Citation Guide
