Submit one page outline of the final paper. This document needs to be in true outline format (A, B, C, sections etc) , and not text paragraphs. Points will be deducted if not in outline format or if a full outline is not provided. This is due at the end of Week 6.
Your final project will be an in-depth analysis of how an international non-profit handles its international communication issues, related to the topics we discuss in this class. Possible topics include the Red Cross, UN, NATO, and World Bank. This paper will be easier if the group you choose has a significant international presence.
This is NOT a paper on how an organization communicates in general, but more on WHY it has chosen to communicate in that way. The purpose of the paper is to relate back the topics covered in class to what and how your organization communicates. For example, it would not be sufficient to detail just that the organization uses radio ads around the world, but rather, why and how radio is preferred over other tactics. You will want to discuss what outreach techniques are used for different audiences and why. For example, why might detailed print materials be appropriate for fundraising efforts and posters or print ads would be appropriate for other audiences and venues? Ideally you should be able to go back through each of the topics we covered in class and note how your organization connects back to them.
Requirements for Final Paper: Your paper MUST address the following questions and reflect the noted page lengths. Please include breaks to reflect the various sections.
Section 1: Introduction — No more than 1/2 page
Introduce your paper and provide brief overview of the document
Section 2: Organization overview — No more than 1/2 page
Briefly describe your non-profit organization
Section 3: Key audiences — At least 1 page
List 4-5 audiences key in your organization’s international efforts. Key audiences might include the following: Employees, donors, media, governments, volunteers, other non-profits, media, and aid recipients.
Discuss the role that each plays in or to the organization (e.g., employees would be “in” the organization but the media is often a key audience “to” the organization)
Section 4: Communications approach to each audience — At least 5-6 pages
For each audience noted in Section 3, discuss how your organization communicates with that audience, and why you think that particular approach(es) is used
Discuss any challenges you see with that selected approach. Does the communication style appear to match the situation? (e.g., would not be effective to use the internet to reach those in need if the power is out)
Section 5: Communications team — At least 1 page
Discuss the types of background and expertise that would be needed for those working communications issues for your organization.
Identify any gaps or missing skills
Section 6: Conclusion — At least 1/2 page
Provide a closing to your paper based on above observations
Section 7: References
Submit 2 or 3 ideas for topic by Sunday of Week 2. Your topic must be approved by the instructor before you begin work.
A detailed outline of the final paper must be submitted by Sunday of Week 6.
Your completed Final Paper is due by FRIDAY (11:59 p.m. CT) of Week 9.
The paper should be 8-10 pages long (no fewer than 8 full pages not including cover page and required table of contents), following the style guidelines provided in the syllabus.
You will need to draw on at least 6 formal references (not including the course textbook) and they should be included at the end or your paper.
As noted elsewhere, Wikipedia is not considered an appropriate reference.
