Discuss the way in which we might see the narrator of “The Tell-Tale Heart” to be an unreliable narrator. What language does he use that might make us see him as “unreliable”? How does knowing that this narrator is unreliable impact readers’ perspectives of both him and the actions in the story?
Do NOT use outside research for these responses.* Don’t even “google” the topic “just to get some ideas.” These questions are meant to bring out your own thoughts on our readings and the issues raised in the prompts. Again, these are meant to be something like in-class discussion questions. There are not necessarily any specific “right” answers I am looking for. I am looking for your insights and originality.
DO use a few quotes and specific references to the literature in your responses. Insert these quotes—from the poems, stories, plays—into your responses smoothly and fluently. Use them to make your points stronger and clearer. I have more detailed In-text citation instructions in the course, but generally: Cite just the page # for any prose quotes from the literature (322). If you quote from a poem, simply cite the line #. You do not need a Works Cited for these responses if you are only using our textbook.
Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily need to answer all of the questions in the prompt you select. Look for a central question to the prompt and remember that you will be starting your response with “Thesis: ” at the top. This thesis, along with the required length of 225-400 words, will guide how much you cover in your response.
*Special Note: The instructions clearly state: Do NOT use outside research for these responses. However, I always want to make it clear that if you decide to go against these instructions, it is YOUR responsibility to cite clearly any source used. (I always want to emphasize that there is NEVER any reason to plagiarize. If you use a source in any way (in any class on any assignment) CITE the source and you can’t get in trouble. You may be penalized on the module response grade here, but at least you will not have to deal with issues of plagiarism.
