This week you will be given a case scenario and you will write the script in regard to the stages of change. You will provide examples that demonstrate how the agent transitions through stages 1- 5. You will be creative with your responses and will steer the steps of change in the direction that you feel best describes the agents 5 stages of change. You are to provide indicating statements from the client that validate the stage that you are addressing. You do not need to address #6 as “Relapse and Termination” are self-explanatory. Make sure you read the articles in this week’s module before beginning this assignment. The stages are:Pre-contemplationContemplationPreparationActionMaintenanceRelapse/TerminationA few examples of the stages of change:Pre-contemplation Stage:A gang that lives in a community with high levels of violence who believe they can continue perpetrating violence and not be personally affected.A husband who comes along to counseling because his wife thinks they have problems but who doesn’t see any problems himself. Contemplation:“I am just not ready to make changes right now”.“My boss thinks I should get over my fear of making speeches, but I am just not sure if this is something that I can do.” Preparation:A person who has been told to prepare to move into a supervisory role and seeks counseling with the goal of gaining confidence in his/her ability to supervise other people.A couple who are committed to working out their problems and ask for help in learning to solve particular issues. ActionA parent, whose children have been removed from the home because the parent used harsh, abusive means of discipline, says that he/she will learn other ways to discipline, willingly goes to a parenting class, and talks with the practitioner about ways to use what he/she is learning. An obese client, when faced with life-threatening health issues, joins Weight Watchers, learns to follow the program, and loses a significant amount of weight. MaintenanceA person has lost weight with the help of Weight Watchers and continues to attend meetings once a month. An individual learns to stop procrastinating on projects and makes plants to check in with someone who will provide honest feedback about whether the problem seems to be reappearing. Relapse/Termination – Clients need to be made aware of the possibility of relapse and helped to view relapse not as a failure but as a learning experience. Relapses can help the client with the opportunity to learn ways to be increasingly successful in achieving their goals. The stage that the clients has relapsed back to will need to be addressed. Termination is not the end of the process but is the point in which the client is not tempted to return to problematic behaviors. Case scenario:Mark and Jeff are a gay couple. They were married in San Francisco and have moved to a small town. They have discovered that the town does not recognize same sex marriage. They are anticipating barriers. They need a realtor to help them find a place to live that is handicap accessible. There is one handicap accessible apartment available right next door to where Jeff will be working. It is the perfect location because Jeff will be able to get to work without needing a car. Jeff contacted the real-estate agent that was in charge of renting the property and was told by the agent that the unit was still available. The agent disclosed that he really liked the apartment complex and in fact, lived in the apartment right next door to the one that is available. Jeff made an appoint to see the unit. Once he and Mark arrived it became very obvious that the agent became uncomfortable after Jeff introduced Mark as his husband. The agent reported that someone else had viewed the apartment and just signed the lease. When the couple asked why they were not notified before driving over the agent replied that it had just happened. Two weeks passed and the couple noticed that the apartment was being advertised as for rent. Jeff called to ask if the first rental fell through, and if the apartment was indeed for rent again. The agent recognized Jeff’s voice and told Jeff that the apartment had just rented. Jeff had a female friend call, and the female was told that the apartment was available. Ironically, the female friend was good friends with the owner of the apartment complex and reported how the events had unfolded for the couple. The owner of the complex spoke with the agent who reported the events to be true. The agent denied that he was practicing discrimination or was homophobic, even though the owner has had at least 4 other complaints from same sex couples that reported they were “turned away from renting” and felt that they were discriminated against by this same agent. The owner rented the apartment to Mark and Jeff, and they have become fast friends with other tenants in their building. The tenants get together regularly at the apartment pool on Saturday evenings for dinner. The agent is not friendly to Mark or Jeff, and although invited, never attends the Saturday night social gatherings. The agent appears to avoid Mark and Jeff as much as possible. The owner gave the agent the choice of either being terminated or going to see a counselor regarding his discriminatory mindset and behaviors. The agent has contacted you, a clinical social worker for counseling. You are to create a scenario that demonstrates how the agent presented and successfully transitions through the 5 stages of change.*Format:One paragraph for each of the 5 stages of change. This means you will have a total of 5 paragraphs that clearly label the stage of change that you are addressing. You are to provide indicating statements from the client that validate the stage that you are addressing.
