Response 1 wk1

The practitioner was professional and pleasant. She made it easy for the patient to communicate with her. Plus, she was able to repeat some of the information the patient relayed to her to validate his answers. In the vignette, it appears as if the provider was not asking open-ended questions. Instead, she was asking leading questions, and she was offering answers for the patients to choose from. Research has shown that asking open-ended questions allows the patient to elaborate on the details and share relevant information about their life, thoughts, and beliefs. Plus, when the patient informed her that he had been feeling angry and edgy and that he commented that he felt like he wanted to get into a fight sometimes, she did not inquire with whom the patient wanted to get into a fight. That would be an opportunity to have the patient elaborate more on his feelings and gain further insight. However, she proceeded to ask him about his energy level and said they would talk about it later.
At this point in the interview, I do have some concerns. The patient stops doing his homework. The patient drinks beer occasionally with his friend. Furthermore, the patient expresses some suicidal ideation, which is an immediate safety concern. Based on the interview, it appears as if the patient suffers from a depression disorder that started after his girlfriend ended their relationship. The patient has been feeling angry and edgy. He loses interest in things he normally enjoys, and he expresses a desire to become violent with others.
My next question is to further inquire about the patient’s suicidal ideations. I would ask him about how he would like to harm himself. This will allow him to elaborate more on his answers, and vital information will not be overlooked.
Psychiatric Assessment of a Child or Adolescent
Several components play a role when it comes to a child or adolescent psychiatric assessment. It is imperative to take note of the child’s development. Often, children are not always able to articulate how they are feeling to an adult. Plus, they may not even think that their emotional state is a cause for concern and they have to share that with a healthcare professional. Or at times, the child may be embarrassed or ashamed of how they are feeling and may even miss information because they are ashamed of being judged, punished, or made fun of. For this reason and many more, a practitioner needs to conduct a thorough, comprehensive psychiatric assessment.
Symptom Rating Scales for Children
The following are commonly used rating scales during a psychiatric exam for a child or an adolescent. The first one is the behavior assessment system for children or the BASC. The BASC is a diagnostic tool designed to assess the behaviors and self-perception of children and adolescents (Smith & Widaman, 2017). It is a multi-method that measures behavioral and personality characteristics through several report-based measures (Smith & Widaman, 2017).
Another symptom rating is the Children’s Depression Inventory or CDI scale. The CDI scale helps to evaluate depression symptoms in children and adolescents (Kovacs et al., 2014). Plus, it also helps to measure emotions and functional obstacles.
Two psychiatric treatment options for children or adolescents
When it comes to treating children with mental illnesses, many treatment options have been approved by the FDA to treat their mental illnesses. For instance, fluoxetine is an FDA-approved medication for children 7 years and older and is considered the first-line treatment option for pediatric depression (Atkins et al., 2017). Plus, Aripiprazole has been approved by the FDA for treating bipolar 1 in children ages 1017 years old (Atkins et al., 2017).
The Parental Role in Assessing the Mental Health of a Child
Parental involvement plays a crucial role in the assessment of the childs mental health. Children’s well-being is dependent on their home life. Parents’ involvement in the childs assessment and participation is required to achieve desired outcomes during the assessment (Pearson, Wagner & Schmidt, 2020). Furthermore, since the parents or guardians live with the children, they offer a unique perspective on the insight into the childs daily habits, coping abilities, functional living, as well as the history of traumas or significant life events that could have contributed to psychological changes (Pearson, Wagner & Schmidt, 2020).
