US Foreign Policy

USFP Paper
Assignment: Fall 21

term paper for the semester will examine a specific area of U.S. foreign policy
in a systematic way.  First, you will
choose a topic.  The topic can be
anything having to do with U.S. foreign policy, though it might help you to
choose something that we will talk about during the course of the
semester.  Once you have chosen a topic,
you will write a one-paragraph description of what you plan to do in your
paper.  I am requiring you to accomplish
two things in your paper.  One is a
comprehensive description of what U.S. foreign policy is on the topic you have
chosen.  This is the less challenging
part.  Your second task is to communicate
to me the SOURCES of the policy that you have described.  In other words, I want to know why our policy
on topic X exists in its current form.
For example, if you are talking about international trade, you will have
to explain why U.S. foreign policy is pro-free trade on most products, but
protectionist on other products.  Your explanation should be centered on the
different actors involved in making U.S. foreign policy.  For example, the president may want
completely free trade but is reined in by
public opinion with regard to a specific product.  Your job is to tell the story of those interactions
in some detail.  My expectation is that your
final paper will be about 8-10 long (doubled spaced with one-inch margins and a 12 pt font).

Your paper is to rely heavily on peer-reviewed
sources supplemented by current accounts in high-quality
non-peer reviewed sources such as Foreign
Policy and government documents.  Peer-reviewed sources are those that have
been vetted by an editorial committee for accuracy and importance before they
are printed.  Sources like Wikipedia and are NOT peer-reviewed.  However, websites like these often have
references at the conclusion of the article that are peer-reviewed.  All the books in our library are peer-reviewed.  Any article you get from a journal in our
library will count as peer-reviewed.  You
will also find a ton of great sources on Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
(a database to which our library subscribes). Your paper must include a minimum of four peer-reviewed sources.   You
also must cite your sources within the paper (using any standard method).  Failure to do this is a form of plagiarism
(since you are not giving credit to your sources).  For example, if you read a paper by someone
named Jane Smith who tells you that U.S. trade policy is run determined by
trade unions, you must do two things.
First, every time you use information from the Smith article, you must
cite it internally.  Smith (2009) posits
that the U.S. protects domestic steel production from foreign competition to
appease labor unions (for example).
Second, you must include the Smith article in a section titled
references on the last page of your paper.
You may adopt any citation method you wish. Just keep things consistent.

don’t grade on grammar.  However, I will
grade in part on your ability to communicate using standard written
English.  You need to make sure that I am
not the first person who reads your paper.
Have a nerdy friend look it over.
Have a classmate look it over.
Do whatever it takes to make sure your paper sounds professional and

paper is due as indicated in the syllabus.
